Sun Gallery Chinese Art and Antiques presents a unique collection of colorful peasant paintings from Hu County in Shaanxi Province, China, October 22 through November 25, 2011.
It was seventeen years ago when Sun Gallery owner Jenny Sun first saw the colorful paintings of Hu County, near Xi'an, and immediately fell in love with this lively "peasant art" style.
The artists are everyday people without specialized art training, who paint as a hobby. The joyous and simple bright colors and designs of these paintings capture the themes and motifs of daily life in rural China, truly capturing "the heart" of the people.
China has changed dramatically since that time, even in the rural areas. The folk arts commonly practiced—papercutting, sculpture, painting—have now been collected by individuals and museums, as peasant life has modernized.

Rocks, Stones, and Boulders: Inspiration from Chinese and Japanese Gardens

    As you prepare for gardening season, you might wonder how Chinese and Japanese gardens use the "fruit of the earth"—rocks, stones, and boulders, in creating the mulit-faceted symbolism of nature and poetry alike.
    To help get you started, Sue Bagge, master landscape and floral designer, will present "Rocks, Stones, and Boulders: Inspiration from Chinese and Japanese Gardens," Thursday, April 7th, 2011, 3–4 p.m. at Sun Gallery. Her lecture will feature slides that show public Chinese gardens in Portland, famous gardens of Japan and the Thai garden in Madison, and how she has used stones and boulders in local gardens.
    Sue is owner of Sungro, Inc, and is a landscape horticulturist with a strong interest in Asian design. Having studied in Japan, she enjoys the challenge of working with stones and boulders to form the backbone so needed in northern gardens that are green just five to six months of the year.
    Enjoy Chinese refreshments and take advantage of our sale on Scholar Rocks and Garden Stones! Then, stay for Northrup-King Building's First Thursday events, when artist studios and galleries are open to visitors, 5–9 p.m.

"Art Attack" at Northrup King features self-guided studio tours of over 200 artists throughout the building. Art Attack is one of the Midwest’s premier open studio events and features artists working in nearly every medium including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, printmaking and letterpress printing, mixed media, clay, metal, glass, fine furniture, textiles, fiber arts, jewelry and more.
Don't forget, you can also visit us by appointment, and the first Thursday of each month.

Sue Bagge is a nationally known flower arranger, and has regularly shown her pieces at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts “Art in Bloom” show and the Home and Garden Show. Carole Hyder, author of two fengshui books, is the head of the Wind and Water School of Fengshui, and offers advise on television and radio.

Please join us for another exciting exhibition of brush paintings and calligraphy by master artist Lampo Leong. He utilizes traditional and modern art concepts and materials to create compelling, gripping and challenging works of art. A leading member of the contemporary art world, Professor Leong is currently the Chair of the Art Department at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and has exhibited in countless solo and group exhibitions worldwide, and won international recognition and awards. His works are included in many museum collections including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, as well as public art commissions in San Francisco, Florida, Indonesia and Japan.

Cizhou ware—with its highly distinctive two-color decorations come from gallery owner Jenny Sun’s hometown in Handan, Hebei Province. Cizhou ware was especially popular among commoners, and reached a peak of popularity in the Song Dynasty (960–1179). Cizhou (pronounced tse-joe) ware is characterized by bold, contrasting designs using iron-rich slips, executed with either a brush or a sgraffito—incising. These modern reproductions come from a family workshop that has revived the ancient local traditions.

Sun Gallery holiday hours in December are Tuesday–Saturday from 12–5 pm. Hours in January are by appointment only. Beginning in February, we return to regular hours: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 11–6.

“Buddhist Sculptures from Ming to Qing Dynasties" Sun Gallery's Fall Show

Our fall show Buddhist Sculptures from Ming to Qing opens Saturday, November 10-December 31, and features some exciting and unique pieces from our new shipment of works from the 10th–20th centuries: Guanyin figures, a Song dynasty stone Buddha, as well as landscape and ancestor paintings from the Qing dynasty, contemporary oil paintings, stone screens, bedside cabinets, vases and more.

Special note: Keep this date for our Chinese Culture Salon! Fire and Earth: Ceramics from Hebei Province, Saturday, January 26th, 2008, 7 pm.

The Beauty of Ceramics

From the most delicate of porcelain to the most rugged hand-built figure sculptures, China's ceramic arts tradition is full of variety, inventiveness, and local specialties. Among the ceramics that Sun Gallery carries, you'll find Yixing teapots, porcelain plates, ceramic pillows (yes!), vases, and many other items.
This fall, Sun Gallery will have a very special show of Cizhou Ceramics from near Jenny Sun's hometown in Hebei Province. Look for an announcement in September!

Embroidery from China

Fine fabrics and embroidery have deep roots in Chinese history. As in many cultures, girls were expected to master needlework, often preparing their wedding clothing, as well as festival and practical items. Sun Gallery carries a selection of exquisite antique and modern fabrics and embroidery made by members of China's various ethnic minorities, as well as Han people. Sun Gallery also has a wonderful collection of decorative antique baby hats.

Scholar Rocks

Formed by the forces of nature, Chinese scholar rocks are unique objects used for contemplation and their beauty. Larger rocks can form the centerpiece of a garden, while smaller ones can be a wonderful addition to a desk, table, or mantle in the home. Scholar rocks are highly collectable.

Perhaps you've admired the large scholar rocks at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts' Chinese Garden, or in a friend's home. Sun Gallery has a wide assortment of scholar rocks for you to chose from, in all sizes, shapes, and colorings. Our scholar rocks all come with custom-made wooden bases.
